The wise founding fathers of Janta Vedic College, Baraut (then named Jat Vedic College) made provision for starting under graduate classes in science in 1949, with a view to imparting quality science education to the sons and daughters of the tillers of the soil of this area. The department of chemistry was given shape for future growth at that very initial stage. The department received a fillip and timely impetus when it was shifted in the newly constructed Ch. Mukhtar Singh Chemistry Block comprising of fairly equipped Laboratories and a spacious Lecture theatre. Since that time, there has been no looking back for the department. It has been marching ahead from progress to progress in academics, research publications and sending out students and scholars to pursue prestigious careers, bringing honour and fame to the college.
The department of chemistry kept providing quality chemistry education to undergraduates for more than ten years and thereafter it was upgraded to post graduate level with specialization in organic chemistry with permission and provision to enroll 17 students in M.Sc. Ist. This number was duly increased up to 24. In 1965 permission was received to start classes in physical chemistry in M.Sc. Final along with organic chemistry. In the year 2000, the University Grants Commission sectioned for the department the vocational course of Industrial Chemistry for under-graduate classes. Along with up gradation, additional courses and increased the strength of students, there has been a matching growth in the infrastructure, equipment and teaching material and facilities in the department. The department got a kerosene oil gas plant installed, which by the standard of those times was one of the best. In 1999 L P G connection and fittings were provided for each laboratory. The department has had the honour of being associated with teachers and scholars of repute. Dr. Ranvir Singh, Principal of the college from 1963-1972 and also an excellent teacher of chemistry helped and inspired the growth of the department in several respects. Dr. Ranvir Singh later joined as principal Aurobindo College Delhi University and had the honor of being a member of Rajya Sabha for full one term. The names of other honorable members of the staff of the department who joined elsewhere as principal are given below: 1. Dr. Jagmer Singh, Principal Nehru PG College Chhibramau (Farrukhabad) 2. Dr. R G Varshney, Principal D. J. College Baraut 3. Dr. Bhopal Singh, Principal A S College Lakhaoti Bulandshahr 4. Dr. Rajpal Singh, Principal J V College, Baraut. All the above gentlemen have performed their duties with great dedication and integrity, bringing good name not only to the department but also to the college.
