National Service Scheme (NSS)

Janta Vedic College, Baraut (Baghpat)

  1. Introduction

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Scheme of the Government of India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It was launched in 1969 to commemorate the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, with the primary aim of developing the personality of students through community service.

The idea of involving students in the task of national service dates back to the times of Mahatma Gandhi, who emphasized the need for youth to participate actively in community development and rural upliftment. The scheme was formally launched on 24th September 1969 by then Education Minister Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao, in 37 universities across India. Over time, the NSS has expanded significantly and is now active in thousands of colleges and universities across the country.

The scheme provides young students with an opportunity to engage in various social service activities and contribute to the development of the nation while enhancing their own skills, leadership qualities, and sense of social responsibility.

The national service scheme at Janta Vedic College, runs under the university umbrella of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.
