DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY

HOME

The Department of Industrial Chemistry at Janta Vedic College, Baraut (formerly Jat Vedic College) was introduced in the year 2000 as a vocational undergraduate course, following the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The course was established under the umbrella of the Department of Chemistry, to provide industry-oriented chemical education tailored to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the chemical and allied industries.

The course began operating from the Dr. Harbir Singh Block within the Department of Chemistry. Designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industrial application, Industrial Chemistry focuses on the practical implementation of chemical principles in industrial settings. This makes it particularly relevant in the present era, aligning closely with the goals and philosophy of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills, thereby enhancing their employability in government, private, and industrial sectors.

The Department of Chemistry itself has a rich legacy, having been founded in 1949, with postgraduate courses introduced in the early 1960s. With continuous infrastructure development and academic upgradation, the introduction of the Industrial Chemistry course marked a significant milestone in the department’s expansion and diversification.

Since its inception, the Department of Industrial Chemistry has benefited from the guidance and academic leadership of a dedicated group of faculty members who served as coordinators and mentors, playing a key role in the course’s development. These include:

  1. Late Dr. Harbeer Singh
  2. Dr. N. P. S. Bisht
  3. Dr. Vijendra Singh
  4. Prof. Shyam Kishor
  5. Prof. (Smt.) Munesh
  6. Dr. Umendra Kumar

Each of these educators contributed significantly to maintaining academic excellence, expanding research opportunities, and fostering an environment conducive to practical learning. With support from other faculty members in the Department of Chemistry, the course has grown in strength, infrastructure, and reputation.

The Department of Industrial Chemistry, established as a vocational course in 2000 under the Department of Chemistry at Janta Vedic College, Baraut, is well-equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support industry-oriented and application-based learning in alignment with modern educational frameworks like NEP-2020.

Classrooms and Library Facilities

  • The department houses two dedicated classrooms, including a modern lecture theatre equipped with a smart board and LCD projector to facilitate interactive and multimedia-based teaching.
  • A departmental library caters specifically to the needs of Industrial Chemistry students, offering textbooks, reference materials, manuals, and journals focused on chemical industries and applied sciences.

Laboratory Facilities

  • The department maintains a well-equipped laboratory, designed to give students hands-on training in essential analytical and industrial chemistry techniques. The lab supports practical sessions, small-scale industrial simulations, and project work.

Instrumentation and Equipment

To strengthen students’ practical knowledge and skills, the department has a wide range of analytical and industrial instruments, including:

  1. Abbe’s Refractometer
  2. Digital Electronic Balance
  3. Conductivity Meter
  4. Calorimeter
  5. COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) Apparatus
  6. Double Distillation Apparatus
  7. Flash Point Apparatus
  8. pH Meter
  9. Redwood Viscometer
  10. Spectrophotometer
  11. Potentiometer
  12. Conductivity Cell
  13. Thin Layer Chromatography Apparatus
  14. Polarimeter

These instruments allow students to perform a variety of tests and experiments that are directly applicable to industrial processes.

Additional Laboratory Instruments (General Purpose)

In addition to specialized equipment, the department also houses various general-purpose instruments to support experimental learning and research:

  • Centrifugal Machine
  • Cooling Apparatus (Refrigerator)
  • Vacuum Oven & Electric Oven
  • Magnetic Stirrer
  • Hot Plate
  • Vacuum Pump
  • Analytical Balance
  • Melting Point Apparatus
  • Comprehensive Glassware Setup

This robust infrastructure ensures that students of the Industrial Chemistry program are well-trained in both theoretical and practical aspects of the subject, preparing them for careers in both government and private sectors, as well as for further academic pursuits.

Department of Industrial Chemistry have gone on to establish successful careers in various fields. A few notable alumni include:

  • Mr. Ankur Malik
  • Mr. Deepanshu – Waste Water Analyst, Delhi Pollution Control Committee
  • Mr. Saurabh Tawer
  • Mr. Shubham Gahalot
  • Mr. Rahul (Robin’s batchmate)
