Department of Agricultural Entomology

The Agriculture Entomology is a major subject/part of agricultural Sciences. The word Entomology has been derived from two Greek words “Entomon” meaning “Insect” and “Logos” meaning “Study”. Entomology is the branch of science that deals with the study of insects. The word insect is derived from Latin word “Insectum” meaning "to cut in to". Insects belong to the Phylum Arthropoda, which is the biggest phylum of animal kingdom and class Insecta/Hexapoda. They are phylogenetically aquatic and became terrestrial later on. Insects are distributed everywhere from cooler parts to hottest tropics. They live in water, land, air, deserts, high mountains etc. They can be seen in crop plants, gardens, libraries, museums, stores etc.
The various Branches of Entomology are Forensic Entomology, Veterinary Entomology, Medical Entomology, Forest Entomology and Agricultural Entomology. The entomology has two major aspects as Fundamental/General Entomology and Applied/ Economic Entomology. General Entomology deals with the basic or academic aspects of the Science of Entomology. It includes morphology, anatomy, physiology and taxonomy of the insects. Economic Entomology deals with the usefulness of the Science of Entomology for the benefit of mankind. Applied entomology covers the study of insects which are either beneficial or harmful to human beings. It deals with the ways in which beneficial insects like predators, parasitoids, pollinators or productive insects like honey bees, silkworm and lac insect can be best exploited for our welfare. Applied entomology also studies the methods in which harmful insects or pests can be managed without causing significant damage or loss to us.
Keeping in view the importance of Entomology in general and Agriculture entomology in particular, the Department of Agriculture Entomology has been established at UG level in Janta Vedic College, Baraut. The department is progressing day by day and it’s expected to touch new heights in the coming times.
