The Department was established in 1956 with the objective of imparting indepth knowledge and understanding of English language and literature. Initially, it was affiliated to Agra University, Agra (U.P.) for Under –Graduate level courses but after the creation of a new university at Meerut, it has been affiliated to C.C.S. University, Meerut. The Department has a long tradition of teaching a number of compulsory and optional courses in English including those in language studies, British English and New Literatures in English.Chaudhary Shiv Singh and Chaudhary Khasey Ram fostered its high tradition of teaching and learning in its infancy.Dr. R P Mittal, the Head of the Department of Economics, was its officiating Head in 1959. The same year Prof. R. L. Awasthi and Prof.Sheobir Singh joined the Department.When Prof. Awasthi left the Department to join a college in Bijnaur, Prof. Sheobir Singh took over as Head of the Department in 1963.The Department gained further strength with the joining of Prof. Balraj Singh in 1964 and Prof. Amar Singh in 1966.They maintained the high tradition of the Department and enhanced its prestige by improving teaching-learning environment of English language and literature.Unfortunately,the Department lost a very good teacher with the sudden demise of Prof. Amar Singh in 1994.The same year, another reputed teacher,Prof. Bal raj Singh retired from service.Prof. Sheobir Singh who not only set new standards of teaching
English language and literature in local educational institutions but also helped a great deal in the spread of English in this area retired on June, 30, 1999 after a brilliant academic career of 40 years. At present there are two teachers in the Department. Dr. Arun Kumar Mishra, the Head of the Department, has been working since Sept. 1999 and Dr. Ram Sharma since Nov. 2000.One post of teacher in the Department is lying vacant.

Infrastructure: The Department has been provided with a computer with printer and Inter-net connection which is used in preparing materials for teaching, learning and evaluation and keeping the faculties updated with the new developments in the academic world.
